Tapco Juice J1400 Amplifier Review שניי המגברים ב4000 שח 1 2000-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Series Juice J1400 Evaluation Received the snazzy looking Juice 1400 and immediately noticed a sharpness to the treble and a opaqueness type of veil. But there still was the signature at-ease sound with great dynamics and wide, precise soundstage. Adding insult to injury, there was an audible clicking sound from the cheap HUI Tong HT-08025 fans. Very annoying! So I opened up the guts and replaced the two fans with drop in replacements Adda AD0812LB-A70GL. Mouser P/N 664 D8025LB-12V. Then inserted a 100 ohm 10watt resistor in series to reduce the largely benign air flow noise. Then I noticed that the front panel power switch and the audio switch should have been reversed on the front panel. Why? Because the ribbon cable carrying the audio signal to/from the main board was actually touching the huge power transformer. The power switch and wires we co-located next to the audio op-amps. If they were reversed on the front panel there would be no compromises to the sound quality. Dumb, dumber and dumbbell Award time? So I cut, shorted and soldered the wires leaving the board and going back to the board together about 4 inches from audio board. This rendered the front panel gain pots inactive and prevented the line level audio signal from being degraded by the magnetic field of the transformer on the other side of the chassis. The units construction quality was fine besides this simply corrected but fatal (to the sound quality) layout issue. I noticed the two TI NE5532 op-amps which drive the high level gain stages. This is probably the best op-amp of all time. It is very transparent and beats the TI TL072 used in the Crown XLS series. So did the modifications correct the sound quality affliction? Yes, as the patient fully recovered. The opaqueness and treble anomalies were gone. Just beautifully tight bass, clean and articulate sound quality throughout the entire audible spectrum remains. Conclusion ------------- This amplifier is recommended for the advanced electronics hobbyist who can take the time to correct the rather stupid design layout. All others need not apply.
